Understanding The Basic Fireplace Parts

Fireplace parts as constituents are components of a fireplace that make it easy and possible to have a controllable fire in your living room where there are people living, and there are lots of flammable items and materials around the room.

Basic Parts of a Fireplace

Some of the basic fireplace parts include:
Chimney
This is the passage way through which the combustion byproducts leave the fireplace .The chimney is a rather important part of a fireplace, without which a fireplace would not exist. It has many parts, such as:
  • The chimney cap, which rest on the top of the chimney to prevent water from getting in through the chimney.
  • Chimney crown, which is the part that protects the chimney walls from damage by weather, especially brick walls.
  • Chimney walls, which are the constructed parts that make up the passage way for smoke.
Firebox
This is the place where combustion takes place where the wood burns and the heat is produced. This is the most important part of the fireplace.
Grill
The grill is a metallic object that has spaces between its bars, where the wood is placed when burning. It acts as a sieve to filter the ash when the wood has burnt completely.
Fuel
This is the combustible material, which produces the heat required. It may be wood or coal, but most people prefer wood to coal, since it is more natural.

Alternative Fireplace Design

There are however alternative designs for fireplace parts, used for most modern and unconventional designs. Most of the modern fireplaces are not smoke fuel fireplaces, but rather use clean fuel such as propane gas. Such are the propane fireplaces. The most common fireplace parts of these kinds of fireplaces are:
  • Burner, where the propane gas ignites to produce the heat
  • Asbestos walls, which are use to build the inside walls ,where the heat is concentrated
  • Heat resistant glass, which allows you to have a pleasant view of the propane flames, and prevent anything from falling into the fire place.

Increasing in Popularity

These types of fireplaces are fast gaining popularity, for a couple of reasons.
  • They are cheap, in comparison to masonry fireplaces.
  • Portability, which is not possible with the masonry design fireplaces.
  • Beauty, which comes from the fact that these fireplaces can be fitted just about anywhere including the back yard as well.
  • Use of environmental friendly fuels.
The materials used to make these fireplace parts are mainly metal and concrete. This is because these materials are able to resist heat as well as offer the strength needed to maintain its rigid state. A modern fireplace is most recommended, if you do not have a fireplace in your home, or enough space to build a masonry one.
